A Midsummer Night's Dream
This was such a meaningful project to be part of.
My friend and director, James Fowler, invited me to create a mural for his bold and evocative reinterpretation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream—shifting the world of the play from ancient Athens to Athens, Georgia, circa 1855.
After researching the antebellum South and drawing inspiration from a particularly powerful visual moment in 12 Years a Slave, I drafted a concept sketch—and James was immediately on board.
Every painted element was designed by me and executed with the help of many volunteer members.
The final mural required many layers (and even more water) to evoke the lushness, heat, and heavy humidity of a Deep South summer. I came to think of it as my first vertical watercolor—and one of the most fun challenges I've tackled as a scenic artist.
